When planning a visit to Birmingham – West Midlands a tourist has the opportunity to mix the new with historic. There are many activities and activities focusing on the modern and new. But, there are also many tours and historic sites to see in this lovely city.
For four weeks of each year the city comes alive with the International Dance Festival. This festival celebrates the cultural diversity of the city with performances from dance troupes around the world. The Birmingham Royal Ballet performs classical and modern ballet for festival goers.
The entire city gets involved in the festival and there are nightly musicals and concerts held throughout the city. This year the festival will be expanding its sixty performances to include modern and cultural dance performed by troupes who will be attending many of the other activities that occur during the festival.
The Jewelry Quarter gives a visitor an excellent example of a working Victorian district. There are many shops and boutiques along the quarter that provide a visitor with unique items created in the city. The quarter was been a world famous jewelry center for hundreds of years and continues to be a major maker and supplier of beautiful jewelry around the world.
There are many historical sites and buildings to see. St. Martin’s Cathedral built in’73 provides the classic architecture and lines of that era and is breath taking. You will find that Birmingham is one of the few English cities to have building designed in the English Baroque style of the early 1700s’. Visiting the Castle Bromwich Gardens brings together this classic style and formal English garden within a walled ten acre garden. At the end of Holly Maze is an excellent example of the period in a glass house. Throughout the garden you will enjoy the mature growth and foliage of over 600 species of plants from the period.
Several miles of the 29 mile canals that flow through Birmingham have been restored and offer you cafes, shops and boutiques along this unique motorway. A visitor can catch one of the boats that travel the canals and see much of the city’s beautiful architecture and hidden treasures from the water.
The Botanical Garden is a beautiful fifteen acre site that provides you with a wonderful opportunity to see the Victorian style in a garden. The bandstand in the central garden is home to many of the events that take place in Birmingham year round. You will enjoy the renovated glass houses that provide themes ranging from sub-tropical to desert climates.
The city offers a visitor many museums and galleries that provide both Birmingham – West Midlands historic beauty and the influence of modern architecture and growth. It provides a vacationer with an enjoyable and unique trip to a city that has a unique and friendly character.
