Managing a child’s behavior problems can be truly challenging. That is why a behavior chart is becoming a popular tool for an effective child discipline. Even in children showing attention deficit disorder (ADD) the use of behavior chart has helped in modifying their behavior.
What is a behavior chart?
For those who are new to this tool, a behavior chart is a chart used to monitor the progress of a child’s behavior. It makes use of rewards system when a child collected enough “points” for good behavior. Alternatively, it can also be used to monitor how many times a child misbehaved and if sufficiently enough may lead to getting a punishment. A behavior chart can be regarded as a “pact” between the parent and the child.
How can behavior chart help me in disciplining my child?
If a behavior chart is used properly and consistently it can effectively modify a child’s negative behavior. It is proven useful in child discipline since it makes your child realize the importance of always obeying you. He will be motivated to behave positively so that he can get the reward you have committed. Otherwise if he becomes stubborn and defiant he will get a punishment instead of a reward.
Behavior charts is just a simple way to show your kid that good deeds reap great rewards whereas bad behavior leads to trouble or unpleasant outcome.
How to make and use a customized behavior chart?
You can make your own behavior chart. In fact, you can ask your kid to help you out making a behavior chart. To create a behavior chart, go through these easy steps:
(1) First of all, you need to talk to your kid that you are setting up a behavior chart to help him improve his behavior. It is not that he is totally unruly and hopeless. Assert him that it is just a fun way to help you remember all his good deeds so you won’t forget to reward him for those.
(2) Gather the materials needed (paper, marker and stickers). Draw a table of ten columns and about four rows. For the topmost left corner (which is also the “cell” of the first row) write “Goal”. On the second to eighth cells of the first row, write Monday to Sunday, each day on each cell. On the ninth cell, write “Total” (for the total number of stars). And for the last cell, write “Reward”.
(3) Under the Goal, write a total of three behaviors you want to monitor and the stars your kid must “earn” to get a reward. For example, getting to bed early and a goal of 7 stars, no hitting other children and a goal of 7 stars, helping with chores and goal of 5 stars.
(4) Each day your child shows these behaviors, you give him a star. By the end of the week, get the total of his stars.
(5) If he is successful in meeting a goal, give him his reward. Rewards can be as simple as going to a park to cooking him his favorite meal.
Additional pointers for using a behavior chart
If you want your behavior chart to be successful in your child discipline then you must be consistent with it. Also, do not overwhelm your kids with too many behaviors to monitor and make the goals attainable. Don’t be tempted to use this chart as an excuse from not being able to buy him the toy he wants because he didn’t behave well. Always consider his side in making this chart, such as the rewards he has to achieve.
Behavior charts are a useful, interactive way to discipline a child. However, this may not be enough to deal with other problems, especially when the roots of his negative behavior are not properly dealt with.
