Qualities And Attributes Required To Become An Undertaker

Undertakers, also known as Funeral Directors, are experts who manage activities and services associated with funerals. To achieve success in this profession the person carrying out these duties must have certain important and unique skills and attributes.

An undertaker should be energetic and be ready to work at odd hours, as he has to be available 24 hours a day. He must be prepared to spend most of his time outside because of the nature of the task.

An undertaker must be an excellent communicator and a patient listener. People from various cultures, religions and traditions as well as those of any age will have to be handled with aplomb by him. Understanding and sympathy will be of great importance as he performs his job. As an undertaker, he is also expected to comfort the family in their moment of grief, and he should not allow pain or grief to cloud his abilities.

As an undertaker, a person must project a dignified and serene personality, while seeing that his disposition doesn’t heighten the sorrow of the grieving family members and relatives.

Knowledge of different religious beliefs, practices and sentiments, and due respect for these greatly helps undertakers in succeeding in their profession. They should be aware of various customs and rituals followed by various sects during the funeral ceremony.

A successful undertaker will essentially possess good organizational skills and managerial abilities. He should also possess leadership abilities and should be able to coordinate with a wide range of people – from the clergy members to the flower seller.

Legal procedures and other formalities to be followed in the event of a death should be known to the undertaker who will have to get the requisite approvals etc for the funeral proceedings and other related matters. He will have to be fully conscious of rules to be followed with respect to collecting death certificates or insurance payments.

Lastly, an undertaker must ensure that his driver’s licence is regularly updated and that he can drive the hearse or funeral limousines during the ceremony.
