Fitness Equipment is sometimes one of the most complicated things that we can buy in our lives. When we make the choice to pursue a healthier lifestyle and get fit we are faced with an onslaught of tools and machines that we can choose from. It can often be overwhelming. Let’s take a look at some of the different categories of fitness equipment so we can have a better idea of what we are dealing with when we go shopping.
Vital Clothing for Fitness
While Fitness clothing is not exactly fitness equipment it is a major category of the fitness market and something that you will need to address. This is where a lot of people spend more money than they should on things that they do not need. There are different considerations for male and female fitness clothing:
-MEN-
Men will need a pair of shorts and usually a comfortable shirt. If doing a lot of weight training, makes sure that the shirt is loose but not baggy. A pair of fitness shoes is also needed. Make sure that they are “men’s” cross trainer style since they are designed to withstand the extra weight of the male body and more strenuous activities often associated with men’s workouts. While most men have an athletic supporter already, if you do not or if yours is old and getting well worn, you will need to get a new one. Jockstraps are sold in most department stores in the men’s underwear area, as well as the sporting goods department. Buy your jock according to the waist size of your normal underwear.
-Women-
Women’s workout clothing will generally include a leotard or body suit along with a cover up shirt and shorts set for those who are modest. You will need a pair of fitness shoes designed for women, these are better designed for activities such as aerobics and cardio based workouts. If you are planning on doing more strenuous activities you may want to consider getting a pair of men’s shoes which are designed to be more rugged. You will need a sports bra as well. These are generally sold in the foundations area of almost every woman’s clothing retailer, but you may want to go to an actual fitness store to buy them as the quality and durability will be better.
Free Weights
Free weights are one half of the base for any effective fitness program. These weights come in three styles, plated, solid and selectric. Plate sets are comprised of a metal bars onto which metal, stone, or sand or water filled “plates” are placed. Plate weight sets take up less room than solid weight sets, but have a disadvantage in the fact that you have to stop your work out for several minutes while you adjust the plates to change weight. Solid weight sets are more expensive and take up a larger amount of space, however you do not have stop working out to change the weight, just grab the next pair. They are usually made of metal or in more expensive sets stone. Lastly selectric systems allow you to add or remove weight to single set of handles with the turn of a knob. The weight units are stored in a base station and the handles are placed here when a selection is made. These offer the advantage of solid weights while saving space and money like plate sets. The only disadvantage is that they have limited amount available, once you “outgrow” the current set you need to buy a larger capacity set.
Gimmick Fitness Equipment
Gimmick fitness equipment is one of the largest markets in the fitness industry. This is also one of the most scam ridden markets in all of the health and fitness industries. These pieces of “fitness” equipment are usually sold on TV infomercials or though websites and promise you that in a short period of time, you can get the body you have always dreamed of without having to do any major work for it. These machines and tools may in some way offer a fitness benefit, however they more often than not fail to provide the result that they promise. Use these with caution
Cardio Fitness Equipment
Cardio Fitness Equipment is the second half of the base that was mention in the free weights area. Cardio equipment generally refers to elliptical trainers, rise trainers, stair climbers, ski machines and treadmills. These machines help you improve your overall fitness level by increasing your heart rate, metabolism and burning calories which helps you to loose fat and inches.
Fitness Equipment Machines
These are for the most part the logical evolution to the free weights they are weight based machines that are operated by the moving of a handle or lever. The machines are great since they can offer a full range of workouts in a small amount of space.
Buying Used Fitness Equipment
One of the best ways to buy fitness equipment is used. You can take advantage of the fact that other people are not as motivated to continue their fitness regimen after they get started as they were when they made the purchase. Most times this equipment is in near brand new condition and you save a lot of money over buying it form the store.
Fitness Equipment is a large market and covers a broad range of items. There are more categories of fitness equipment than what we can go into here. With the right amount of time and patience you will find the right equipment for you.
